Biography

Matthew Westmeyer (Recording Engineer/Sound Designer/Composer) received a Bachelor’s degree in Business - Management of Technology from Athens State University and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Music Industry Communications from Calhoun Community College. He has received multiple certifications in Avid Pro Tools Software, the most recent being Pro Tools “Operator Music” certification in 2021.

Mr. Westmeyer taught Digital Recording Technology at Calhoun Community College from 2003 to 2017, during which time he updated the Calhoun facility with modern computer-based audio mixing and editing and digital composition and charting.

Since joining the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2017, he has helped design and restructure courses in Music Technology, applying extensive MIDI and audio recording and mixing for music and multimedia. He co-founded the UAH Computer Ensemble in 2017, an electronic music group, focusing on original production and collaboration for live performance. During the pandemic of 2020, Mr. Westmeyer converted five Music Technology courses and the Computer Ensemble experience to a fully online format and achieved his QEPO certification.

In 2019, he developed and supervised a complete redesign of the Roberts Hall “Studio A” recording studio, creating a fully functional, state-of-the-art, digital recording studio. He facilitated the additional redesign of Studio A during the COVID pandemic of 2020, thus maximizing video live-streaming capabilities and making live-stream performance and production possible in the eventual post-pandemic environment. Through his efforts, Studio A is now capable also of recording, mixing, and mastering audio in Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos. This studio has been and is used to record every performance in Roberts Recital Hall for archival and instructional purposes.

Mr. Westmeyer has developed numerous interdisciplinary projects, including “The Haunted Piano Experience”, a concert series collaboration involving UAH students of the Music, Music Technology, and Video and Animation programs; the MIDI-capable Yamaha DCFX player piano; and creation and projection of holographic imagery. He helped facilitate remote piano lessons using the Yamaha DCFX piano technology, utilizing its advanced internet-based connectivity among multiple universities in the U.S., and establishing online pedagogical opportunities between the UAH piano facility in Huntsville and the Yamaha Corp. in Beijing, China.

Mr. Westmeyer has worked professionally as a recording engineer in Huntsville, AL, and surrounding areas since 2003 and has advanced his expertise in electronic music production during that time. In recent years, Mr. Westmeyer has worked as a sound designer for Public Radio and as a composer for UAH Theatre.
