Quantifying Uncertainties in Inverse Problems: Meaning and Usefulness of Error Bars on Information Extracted from Stockpile Stewardship Experiments

While DOE has moved to a scientific paradigm driven by modeling and simulation – and in which experimentation is motivated primarily by code validation – there is still much to be learned by analyzing data directly and extracting information from experimental data by solving inverse problems. In order to quantify the uncertainties associated with the solutions, however, it is necessary to use statistical approaches to formulating the inverse problems and to understand the nature of the uncertainties for which such formulations can correctly account. In this work we will present data from NNSA X-ray imaging experiments related to the stockpile stewardship program, some inverse problems whose solutions inform the evolution of our experiments and diagnostics systems, and the challenges associated with the Bayesian formalisms used to assign error bars to the information extracted. The discussion will include details of the experiments themselves, where mathematical data analysts fit into the experimental programs, the role of mathematical theory in development of analysis techniques, and results demonstrating the efficacy of solving statistical inverse problems to drive stockpile stewardship.

Requirements: The University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for part-time, non-tenure-track instructors of introductory courses in Mathematical Sciences.    Requirements: Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Mathematics; previous teaching experience desirable but not required. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate introductory courses in Mathematics. Salary is dependent on qualifications. Reappointment is dependent on need and a satisfactory review. UAH Math Club News

Fall Semester has started and the UAH Math Club is gearing up for a great year!   Did you know that you do not have to be a mathematics major or minor to join the Math Club?  Anyone can join!!  The Math Club seeks to spread knowledge of and interest in mathematics through projects and community outreach.  Their goal is to gain understanding of different mathematical applications through guest lectures and mathematical conferences.  With this knowledge, the Club wishes to spark interest in mathematics and STEM careers in local schools by visiting and describing different uses of math in STEM and by hosting a high school mathematics tournament.

The Math Club raised enough money last year to support a child this year for the Secret Meals For Hungry Children Program sponsored by the Alabama Credit Union. The Math Club is looking forward to an exciting 2015-2016 academic year and again will be diligent with their fund raising efforts for group this year.    The Secret Meals feeds well over 1,100 disadvantaged schoolchildren. 100% of each donation goes entirely to the purchase of Secret Meals food packs, so every dollar of support makes a difference.  A donation of $140 wwill feed one child weekly for an entire school year.
