Richard Hiatt (BSBA, Management ’83) retired after serving for 27 years as the first Executive Director for the Food Bank of North Alabama.

Mr. Richard W. Hiatt served with the U.S. Navy on active duty in Ethiopia, Iceland and Italy before entering the U.S. Naval Reserve. In 1984, Dick became a VISTA volunteer assigned to establish a food bank to ameliorate hunger in north Alabama. Dick became the first executive director of the Food Bank of North Alabama in 1985 and continued to serve in that position until he retired in October 2012.  In 1998 Dick was elected to the Huntsville City Council representing District 2.  During his four-year term, Dick served on the City’s Finance Committee, three of which as the Committee’s Chair.  Dick has served on numerous board and committees including on the board of directors of Alabama Arise, a statewide public policy and lobbying entity targeted to improving Alabama’s poor.  In 1994 Dick served as one of the original Grant Review Committee members for the Corporation For National and Community Service, AmeriCorps.  Dick is a graduate of the University of Alabama, Huntsville.  He was inducted as a UAH Alumnus of Achievement in 2007.
