The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) has received a $14,550 gift from the Mona Smith Legacy Fund, a bequest established through the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville to celebrate Mona Jeanne Boles Smith’s legacy of generosity and service.
OLLI at UAH, a part of the University of Alabama System, is a member-based learning community for adults age 50 and older. It offers a wide variety of courses, bonus lectures, events, and social and travel opportunities during the fall, spring, and summer of each academic year.
“This generous donation helps ensure OLLI at UAH’s continued success in providing lifelong learning for our growing membership,” says Clay Williams, OLLI program manager.
Smith’s gift will go to the OLLI Support Fund to help with special items and large purchases. On the program’s wish list is an official van for transportation–the OLLI Trolley.
Smith is remembered as a multi-passionate and well-cultured individual. The organizations designated in her bequest reflect her love and support of the arts, education and social justice.
She had a successful career as an educator, first teaching high school English and Spanish in Iowa. After retiring to Huntsville, she taught subjects ranging from literature to opera for OLLI and LearningQUEST. She enjoyed playing the piano, attending local orchestra performances, and conducting and singing with the Senior Chorus at Madison Senior Center.
OLLI’s fall term begins Sept. 11.
