Software Licenses

Software Available Through TAG

TAG is the distribution point for computer software for which the university owns site licenses.

Free Anti-Virus Software

UAHuntsville has an agreement with McAfee to distribute the company's anti-virus software to the students, faculty, and staff of the university. The McAfee software license allows installation on both university and student-owned Windows PCs.

The current version of the McAfee anti-virus software is available for immediate download by currently registered students and UAHuntsville-owned PC users only. To download the software, you must use a computer that is connected to the network through an on-campus network access point, i.e., ResNET or the campus wired/wireless networks.

You may also pick up a copy of the anti-virus software for your computer at the TAG Help Desk in the library.

NEW! Microsoft Office and Core CAL Free for Participating Units

A site license has been negotiated with Microsoft for the core CAL suite and MS Office. These products are available for all UAHuntsville owned equipment including computer labs. To take advantage of this offer, you must report through one of the following participating units.

  • Academic Affairs
  • Advancement
  • Finance and Administration
  • President's Office
  • Office of Diversity

Please complete the standard Software Request Form to order these free products.

If you do not belong to one of the participating departments, you will need to procure Microsoft Office products through your Research Center or the Office of Research.

Ordering Campus Software

TAG offers software for university-owned devices. The Software Request Form contains the current price list for many products available. Submission instructions can be found on the form. TAG can assist staff and faculty with the procurement process for almost any software product, even those not listed on the form. Please contact TAG for more information. TAG is committed to working with i.t. solutions to provide cost-efficient products to staff and faculty.

TAG keeps a small store of products that are typically requested by staff and faculty. As needed products are procured, i.t.solutions funds the purchase. The funds are later collected from the requesting department via the Transfer Authorization Form. You may include a completed Transfer Authorization Form with your Software Request Form.

UAHuntsville has been able to establish several site licenses (see Mathematica below, as an example) and are pursuing others. In the meantime, please note our current processes and vendors.

Other Microsoft products that fall outside of the Office Suite can be purchased from Dell at a reduced rate through participation in the Alabama Joint Purchasing Program. The licenses purchased are for single-use only and only for university-owned devices.

Adobe products can be purchased from Computer Intelligence Association through TAG. The licenses purchased are for single-use only and only for university-owned devices.

Oracle products can be purchased from Oracle by visiting their E-Delivery Website. You can register yourself and use the site to download what you need. Contact TAG if you need assistance. The licenses purchased are for single-use only and only for university-owned devices.

Science & Statistics Software (Faculty and Staff Only)

In addition to the software products listed on the Software Request form, UAHuntsville has site licenses for the following science and statistics software:

Maple from Maplesoft

Maple is a mathematics and modeling application for UNIX, Windows, and Macintosh. UAHuntsville maintains an unlimited site license for Maple, allowing for the use of the software on university-owned computers. Departments may request copies of Maple at no charge to the department. For more information, email the TAG Help Desk at tag@uah.edu

PV-WAVE and JWAVE from Visual Numerics

PV-Wave is a data analysis and visualization application for workstations and PCs. JWAVE is the PV-WAVE Web Development Environment for network-based visual data analysis that allows for collaboration and data sharing over the Internet, regardless of computer platform. UAHuntsville maintains a site license for the Windows XP/Vista and UNIX versions of the software. For more information, email the TAG Help Desk.

IMSL from Visual Numerics

IMSL is a library of embeddable math and statistics algorithms for analytic applications. The prewritten algorithms can be used to create C, C# for .NET, Java, Fortran, and Python applications. UAHuntsville maintains a site license for the Windows and UNIX versions of IMSL. For more information, email the TAG Help Desk.

Mathematica

What is Mathematica?

Mathematica is the world's most powerful global computing environment. Ideal for use in engineering, mathematics, finance, physics, chemistry, biology, and a wide range of other fields, it makes possible a new level of automation in algorithmic computation, interactive manipulation, and dynamic presentation--as well as a whole new way of interacting with the world of data.

Getting Mathematica...

Mathematica is currently installed in labs across campus. Check with the IT Group for details.

Mathematica can also be installed on:

If you are interested in putting Mathematica elsewhere (such as in labs or in HPC applications) please let the IT Group or Andy Dorsett know.

There's also a knowledge base available for quick reference.

What are the best steps to start using Mathematica?

If you are brand-new to Mathematica, below are some suggestions on the best ways to get started.

Students
  1. Watch the "Hands-On Start to Mathematica" tutorial screencast.
  2. Explore the Learning Center for topics relevant to your interests.
  3. Launch Mathematica, open the Classroom Assistant, and perform your first few computations.
  4. You're now ready for the projects that faculty will assign.
Teaching faculty
