Northrop Grumman and The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), have again partnered to create a new collegiate mentorship program in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) majors.

The Northrop Grumman Group Mentorship Program will offer 21 students in STEM majors at UAH the opportunity to interact and be mentored in lunch and learn sessions on key topics by Northrop Grumman employees and leaders. The program's kick-off presentation was held on Friday, Aug. 21, from 2 p.m., to 3:30 p.m., in Technology Hall room N277.

The mentoring program falls under the Northrop Grumman Aid to Higher Education funding partnership for STEM related student projects, lab support, student organizations, and user experience and computer science course development. The total aid being allocated for this portion of the partnership is $15,000.

"Northrop Grumman is committed to building the pipeline of STEM talent at UAH," said Dan Verwiel, Vice President and General Manager, Integrated Air and Missile Defense, Northrop Grumman Information Systems. "We look forward to strengthening our partnership with students in the Group Mentorship Program."

The purpose of the Northrop Grumman Group Mentorship Program is to:

  • Build student interest in STEM areas/careers
  • Boost the percentage of college students completing undergraduate and graduate degrees in STEM majors
  • Increase the number of STEM trained professionals for the future Huntsville workforce

"This partnership with Northrop Grumman is an important part of preparing students for an increasingly competitive workforce," said UAH President Robert Altenkirch. "Our campus continues to strive to produce graduates who earn a diploma and contribute immediately to the needs of corporations and agencies in the greater Huntsville area."

Last spring, Northrop Grumman and UAH expanded their existing relationship to foster education, research and recruitment with a key goal to bolster the North Alabama area workforce. Future areas of collaboration between Northrop Grumman and UAH include cyber, systems engineering, and modeling and simulation.
