UAH will host “Teaching the Complexities of the Holocaust,” a free professional development workshop for North Alabama educators, on Monday, Jan. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Department of History and the College of Professional Studies at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) are pleased to present "Teaching the Complexities of the Holocaust," a free professional development workshop for North Alabama teachers in grades 6-12. The workshop will be held on Monday, Jan. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the UAH campus.

The workshop is one of four being held across the state to provide teachers with resources and pedagogical approaches to teaching the complexities of the Holocaust; the series as a whole is organized and sponsored in partnership with the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center, the Alabama Holocaust Commission, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM).

"This is an excellent and deeply important opportunity for teachers and students across the state, and I am delighted that UAH is able to help bring "Teaching the Complexities of the Holocaust" to educators in North Alabama," says Dr. Molly Johnson, an associate professor in UAH's Department of History. "The USHMM has spent over 20 years developing nuanced pedagogical materials to help educators teach the Holocaust in courses ranging from history to civics to literature."

The workshop will be facilitated by regional educators from the USHMM, the nation's premier Holocaust education center, and will include books and resources in addition to lunch and a snack. Teachers who require a substitute to attend can also apply for up to $80 in reimbursement for their school, and those who complete the workshop will receive continuing education units.

Spots are limited, however, and will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Teachers interested in attending must register by January 4 by completing and mailing the registration form to:

The Birmingham Holocaust Education Center
P.O. Box 130805
Birmingham, AL 35213-0805

A check for $25 made out to Birmingham Holocaust Education Center is also required but will be returned upon arrival at the workshop.
