My name is Taryn Brown and I am a Junior in the College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I just completed my second out of five semesters in the upper-division nursing program and it has been so rewarding. I am from Madison, AL so the thought of attending UAH was never that exciting to me. However, all of that changed once I actually became a student. The entire staff in the College of Nursing is so helpful and makes it very clear that they only want what is best for each and every student. It’s super easy to make connections with professors and students in other cohorts which makes the experience so rewarding and enjoyable. I have also recently become a College of Nursing Ambassador and that is extra rewarding in and of itself. As an Ambassador I’ve been able to further my connections with faculty and staff as well as welcome prospective students to the College of Nursing. I have enjoyed our clinical experiences so much this semester. It’s been amazing to be able to shadow nurses in different departments to really get a feel for what it’ll be like to actually be a working nurse.

I know nursing school is difficult and demanding, but my main piece of advice would be to find a campus organization to get involved in. Personally, I am incredibly involved in my sorority on campus, and having a separate, non-academic-based organization to be a part of has helped me work on my time management, prioritization, and confidence, and has made me a better student all around. It’s also so important to make sure you figure out what study style works best for you and don’t be afraid to try out new things! I used to hate flashcards in high school but now those are what help me get A’s on my exams. Lastly, try to be able to be flexible and stay determined, and everything will work itself out. Charge On!!
