UAHuntsville University Center

December 5th, 2011

Welcome to UAHuntsville’s University Center (The UC). Throughout history, university centers have offered an array of services to students, as well as the entire campus community. The UC continues this trend by providing our students with a “one stop shop” experience. A few of our most popular areas include Enrollment Services’ Charger Central, the Charger Café, Barnes and Noble Bookstore, Charger Brew serving Starbucks coffee, and the game room.

The UC provides many extracurricular activities and events designed to provide students with unlimited entertainment and developmental opportunities.  We encourage you to visit the Student Activities Office in UC 111 and explore the many clubs, organizations, services, and activities available. We are confident that you will discover a new and exciting experience to enhance your time at UAHuntsville.

UAHuntsville to construct new Student Center

By William T. Martin

The trends become more obvious with each passing semester. The University of Alabama in Huntsville continues its progression toward having a more active student life and ethos and expanding opportunities for those students enrolling at the university.More full-time students are taking classes. More students are choosing to live on campus. More students are engaging in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities outside the classroom. More campus activities to support both residential and commuting students are in the works. All of these factors are leading UAHuntsville to adding a new student life facility at the center of the campus.

“This facility will continue to support the development of a vibrant campus focused on a full student experience for both our residential and our commuting students,” said Dean of Students Regina Hyatt.

A $39 million budget has been established to build the Student Life Center as a short-range project in the 2010 campus master plan. The facility will be located on the south side of Holmes Avenue at the intersection with the planned campus greenway, or what is currently Erskine Street.

The 170,000-square-foot, mixed-use building will create new space for student activities, food vendors, dining, as well as some retail outlets that are complementary to the student population.

The building will include a plaza and wide, ground-level passages that will create gathering spaces, which is expected to increase student activity on campus. Streetscape improvements will use environmental cues that will better support the mix of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, thus creating safer crossing zones across Holmes Avenue.

The facility is being constructed from the proceeds of an institutional revenue bond issue with annual debt service to be paid from student fees, according to Ray Pinner, the university’s vice president for finance and administration.

The University of Alabama Board of Trustees is considering the selection of an architectural team to lead the design of the new facility at its meeting today. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2012 and completion is scheduled before the beginning of the 2013 Fall semester.
