Brian Cozby has been selected as the new UAH Chief of Police effective July 7. He was chosen from a highly competitive pool of more than 80 applicants following an extensive national search.
“It is an absolute honor to have the opportunity to lead the UAH police department and to serve the UAH community,” Cozby says. “I am looking forward to working with all parts of the university and community and enhancing collaboration efforts. I cannot wait to officially become a Charger!”
A veteran law enforcement professional whose experience includes 16 years at major universities, Cozby stresses the goal of building collaborative, diverse teams, and focusing on delivering progressive 21st century campus law enforcement. He views community and campus involvement as a focal point in his new role.
“Being involved in the community is essential in campus policing and is extremely important to me,” Cozby says. “One of my first goals is to expand how the UAH police department works and interacts with the community. I want our officers to be visible to all members of the university and community. It is vital to listen to students, staff, and faculty about how best we can provide needed services.”
Brian Cozby has managed multiple urban campus law enforcement divisions. His most recent role has been with the George Mason University Department of Police & Public Safety as Assistant Chief of Police Operations, where he was responsible for overseeing the department’s daily operations and managing all divisions in the absence of the Chief of Police.
Previously Cozby was a Captain in the George Mason University Support Services Division with operational responsibility for the department training unit, special events unit, communication 911 center, the vehicle fleet, the IT unit, and the evidence department.
Cozby served for eight years as a Lieutenant in the Vanderbilt University Police Department. His responsibilities included managing incidents that required an Incident Command System (ICS) response, performance counseling, and implementing proactive approaches to crime reduction.
Cozby earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Missouri and is completing his Master of Science degree in Criminology Law & Society. He acquired significant leadership skills while serving as a Platoon Leader in the United States Army on active duty from 1999 to 2004. His military service includes commanding over 300 combat support missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Cozby and his family are excited about relocating to Huntsville to be close to family and friends.
Welcome to UAH, Chief Cozby!
