The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently announced that personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face masks, hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes, are considered qualified medical expenses with the health care flexible spending account (FSA) and health savings account (HSA). These changes are effective for expenses incurred on or after January 1, 2020.

If you’re enrolled in an HSA or Health Care FSA, here’s how you can use your funds:

  • To submit eligible PPE expenses for reimbursement: Log into your PayFlex member website.
    • You can also log into the PayFlex Mobile® app.
  • If you have a PayFlex debit card:
    • Allow time for the debit card system to update across each merchant. PayFlex doesn’t manage this process, and timing may vary.
    • If your PayFlex debit card doesn’t work at time of purchase, you can pay out of pocket, and request reimbursement from your PayFlex account funds (see above).

If you have questions, you may visit the PayFlex FAQ site, call PayFlex at 800-284-4885 or call Benefits & Employee Services at 256-824-6640.
