Faculty at The University of Alabama in Huntsville primarily work in either 9- or 12-month appointments. Most faculty are on a 9-month or academic year appointment, while deans, associate deans, chairs, and directors are usually on a  12-month appointment. At the moment, faculty who are on a 9-month appointment have the option to be paid over 9 or 12 months, while faculty on a 12-month  appointment must be paid over 12 months. 

Effective in AY 2024-2025, all faculty who are on a 9-month appointment will be paid over 9 months. There will no longer be a 12-month pay option for faculty who are on a 9-month appointment. Faculty on a 9-month appointment will receive 18  equal biweekly installments, with the first check issued on August 30, 2024, and the  18th check issued on April 25, 2025. 

The recent payroll audit conducted by the Office of Internal Audit necessitates the aforementioned change to ensure the current processes are efficient and comply with Accounting Standards, IRS Regulations, and regulations pertinent to sponsored funding. 

While the University recognizes this is a big change for those 9-month appointment faculty who normally receive their paychecks over 12 months, the change is necessary for UAH, and the Payroll Office is taking steps to ensure a smooth transition. The University encourages those faculty who want to set up a “savings account” to meet with the Payroll Staff to discuss this option. The faculty who choose to set up the “savings account” have the option to draw on the interest-bearing account over the summer months, or at any amount or interval based on the balance available. There will be no change for faculty who are on a 12-month appointment or faculty who are on a 9-month appointment and already chose to be paid over 9 months. 

The Offices of Internal Audit and Payroll met with the Faculty Senate on Friday,  November 17, 2023, to discuss this change. It was requested during the meeting that a communication memo pertaining to this payroll change be sent to all faculty during the spring semester.
