An Individual, A Martyr, and Claiming Him: A microhistory of the global ‘60s, the Arab Left, and the Lebanese Civil War Conference/Lecture Friday, October 30, 2020 The event started -1427 days agoMultiday event - 0 days 3:30 PM 4:30 PM Online Zoom An Individual, A Martyr, and Claiming Him: A microhistory of the global ‘60s, the Arab Left, and the Lebanese Civil War Dylan Baun, Assistant Professor of History Friday October 30, 3:30-4:30 p.m. This talk profiles a new project on Imad Nuwayhid (1944-1975), a lebanese activist, hotel employee, and martyr for the Lebanese communist Party during the Lebanese Civil War. Through examining his writings, party sources, and conducting interviews with individuals who knew him, I find that Imad’s life reflects a double bind for many young leftists during the “global ‘60s,” caught between engaging in global capitalism and calling for its destruction. It also shows that in death, parties to Lebanon’s war appropriated individuals, turning them into symbols, but not without resistance.
