Age:

The minimum age for enlistment is 17. An individual who is 17 years of old at the time of enlistment, unless married, must have a parent or guardian’s consent on Department of the Air Force Form 1056 before being enlisted/contracted. Alabama law requires parent or guardian to co-sign DAF Form 1056 for contracting/enlistment.

Academic General Military Course (GMC):

The GMC comprises the first two years of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Program (AFROTC). All cadets must successfully complete classes in aerospace studies and pass all Leadership Laboratories that are part of the AFROTC curriculum.

Professional Officer Course (POC):

Cadets compete for an allocation in the POC during the second year of the GMC (second semester for AS250s). During the POC, cadets must be enrolled as a full-time student ata college or university that offers AFROTC classes or has a crosstown agreement.

  1. Cadets on scholarship must maintain a 2.5 GPA. Cadets not on scholarship must maintain a 2.0 GPA.
  2. All cadets must be enrolled full-time as a student (12 credit hours minimum per semester).

Fitness Scholarship Cadets: If you are currently an Air Force ROTC cadet, before you can be eligible for a scholarship, you’ll be required to meet Air Force ROTC weight and fitness standards. If you exceed the fitness standards for body mass index and are on scholarship, your scholarship offer may be withdrawn.

Non-Scholarship Cadets: If you do not meet Air Force ROTC weight and fitness standards, you can still participate in the program as a non-scholarship cadet. However, you will be expected to work toward meeting the standards and must do so if you want to commission as an officer in the Air Force or Space Force. You must also meet fitness and BMI standards to compete for entry into the POC.

  1. Physical Fitness Test (PFT): The PFT is taken twice a year (once per semester) to ensure cadets meet Air Force fitness requirements, with a minimum passing score of 75.
    • GMC cadets not on scholarship must attempt the test, but do not have to pass.
    • GMC cadets on scholarship, and POC cadets must pass the test each fall and spring term.
  2. The assessment consists of:
    • One minute of push-ups
    • One minute of sit-ups
    • 1.5 mile run

Medical Applicants must demonstrate that they are physically prepared for the rigors of Air Force ROTC and their future careers in the military. As part of AFROTC, cadets must undergo a medical examination by a military doctor or designated civilian contractor. The medical examination will be scheduled and reviewed by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB).

Waivers:

For students applying through the High School Scholarship Program, a waiver request will be automatically forwarded from DoDMERB to the Air Education and Training Command Surgeon General (AETC/SG) for consideration.

For college students or cadets, a waiver request must be submitted by Air Force ROTC.

Detachment Commander at your school to AETC/SG.

If the waiver request is denied and there are extenuating circumstances that justify further consideration, follow the instructions in the DoDMERB notification letter about rebuttals.

Enlisted/Prior Enlisted Service:

Members of other service branches who want to join Air Force ROTC and become Air Force or Space Force officers may apply for the Professional Officer Course-Early Release Program (POC-ERP) or the Airman Scholarship and Commissioning Program (ASCP). Members applying for entry into AFROTC must meet the requirements for the program to which they are applying and obtain a conditional enlistment release from their service personnel system.

Applicants are not authorized to pursue a second bachelor’s or graduate degree or apply if they are within one year of completing a bachelor’s degree.

Qualifications to apply:

  1. Be a US Citizen
  2. Have one year’s time in service (waivable)
  3. Have one year’s time on station (waivable)
  4. Be recommended by an immediate commander
  5. Pass AFROTC PFT
  6. Be admitted to a school offering AFROTC
  7. Have a qualifying Air Force or Space Force Officer Qualification Test scores.
  8. Be commissioned and enter active duty before age 39 (to receive a scholarship, you must be under age 31 on December 31 of the commissioning year)
  9. Be able to complete all undergraduate degree requirements in two years or less (minimum 1.5 years with a waiver)
  10. Have at least a 3.0 cumulative college GPA 11. Not be selected for a reassignment prior to submission of the application

Citizenship: Be a U.S. citizen

Non-U.S. citizens:

Be able to become citizens prior to contracting. Immigrants pursuing citizenship must provide the original Immigration Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card for verification to become applications. Students with applicant status may compete for an Enrollment Allocation (EA) and attend Field Training, provided they can obtain citizen within 12 months after the POC Selection Process results are announced. The application is responsible for obtaining citizenship; failure to obtain citizenship will result in loss of EA.
