Over the past decade, Fathia Hardy has been at the forefront of professional development, lifelong learning, and continuing education programs at UAH. Soon, you can also catch her on stage as Mrs. Fred and a Caroler in Fantasy Playhouse Children's Theater and Academy's (FPCTA) production of A Christmas Carol

Since age seven, Fathia has had a passion for the theatrical arts. From her early days of attending children's theater productions and summer camps to her membership in the Shades Valley High School Theater Academy, Fathia’s immersion in theatrical arts laid the foundation for the critical skills she applies now in her professional endeavors as the Director and subject-matter expert for the UAH Office of Professional and Continuing Education (OPCE), a part of the University of Alabama System.

You don’t expect to receive a lesson in leadership from the theater, but if you look a little closer, that’s exactly what you’ll get.

Director, UAH OPCE

Reflecting on her journey, Fathia shares, “You don’t expect to receive a lesson in leadership from the theater, but if you look a little closer, that’s exactly what you’ll get. Fantasy’s motto of teaching life skills through stage skills resonates with me, and I’m proud to contribute to their mission.”

Here are the key lessons professionals can learn from the theater:

Train Rigorously
Fathia’s unique approach to training emphasizes the importance of training rigorously. There is a common misconception about the best performers that they are naturally gifted. Although many people do possess natural talent, it does not overshadow the fact that performers work hard. The same is true for leadership. If you want to be a great leader, you have to work hard. Skills like empathy, courage, and thinking on your feet are not innate characteristics. They must be learned and regularly practiced.

“It is incredible to see a child (or a professional) who has struggled with public speaking and engagement their entire lives suddenly realize that they are capable,” says Fathia. Their confidence begins to overflow, and it’s wonderful to witness.”

Communicate with Conviction
One of the most crucial skills performers have is their ability to communicate. They understand the mission and why it matters, allowing them to convey it to their audience. This is critical for leaders. Further, performers understand that communication is about more than just speaking. It is a comprehensive skill set that includes active listening, empathy, body language, and the ability to discern thoughts. Like performers, leaders must be able to read signals and pivot their communication to the audience's needs. When you communicate in a way familiar to your audience, your message will resonate more deeply.

Build Teams
The best performers (and leaders) are team builders. Sure, there are leading roles, but performers know the show would be impossible without the entire cast and crew. They succeed together and fail together. The same is true for leaders. They may be the face of the organization, but none of it would be possible without the support of the entire team. “Just like on stage, every leader needs the support of a cohesive team,” says Fathia. Leaders capable of building effective teams have a critical advantage over others.”

Children consistently develop these skills–and many more–at FPCTA. It is clear these lessons extend beyond the stage to the professional environment. Executives can draw inspiration from the theatrical arts, learning skills that transition seamlessly from the spotlight to the boardroom.

A Christmas Carol runs December 1-3 and 7-10 at the Von Braun Center Playhouse in Huntsville, AL.  Purchase tickets at fantasyplayhouse.org.
