What’s your favorite Week of Welcome (WOW) event? Members of the Student Government Association (SGA) at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) offer recommendations.
The Glow Rage Paint Party, the final Tradition Event on Aug. 19, appeals to SGA President Josh Jamison – but not because he has fond memories.
“This is going to be my first WOW,” says Jamison, who transferred to UAH during COVID and missed WOW.
He points to a picture of color-splashed people on a wall of the Office of Student Life. “It looks like a lot of fun. It looks like everybody will either be out of their element or being themselves.”
But after Jamison hears Nikki Goode describe PlayFair, a Tradition Event on Aug. 13, he says he might change his mind about which one he’s looking forward to the most.
“PlayFair is an oversized team-builder and ice-breaker experience where you are all over the place, meeting new people from the time it starts until the second it ends,” says Goode, director of Student Life, which coordinates WOW. “You’re completing tasks together and challenges and playing games and answering questions. It’s an exciting experience.”
Heath Hudson, SGA vice president, touts the benefits of SGA’s Find Your Way Tours on Aug. 12.
“We’ll actually walk new students through their schedule. We can fill them in on any questions they might have about SGA. It’s different here at UAH than it was in high school. We can actually make a difference in campus life.”
SGA Secretary Krista Hamilton encourages students to learn about UAH’s registered student organizations at the Charger Express Involvement Fair on Aug. 15.
“It gives the students a chance to see for themselves all the options they have to get involved on campus. You’re not just reading about them but actually getting to talk to the people who are involved in the organization. I’ve always said that being involved in our registered student organizations is the way to have the best four years at UAH.”
And check out any event that has free food, Hamilton adds and the others agree. Taste of Huntsville on Aug. 11 and Charger Blue BBQ on Aug. 13 are two of the big eating events, but the whole WOW experience is filled with tasty treats.
