Wildlife and fisheries sciences expert, Dr. Kirk O. Winemiller will be the guest speaker for the Distinguished Speaker Series on Sept. 27.
Kirk O. Winemiller, a wildlife and fisheries sciences expert at Texas A&M University will be the guest speaker for The University of Alabama in Huntsville's (UAH) Distinguished Speakers Series on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
Winemiller will give the public talk "Hydropower Development in the Tropics, a New Threat to Aquatic Biodiversity," at 7 p.m., in the Shelby Center room 107. His expertise is focused in the evolutionary, community, ecosystem and fisheries ecology, with more than 200 published scientific journal articles, book chapters and books. His visit is sponsored by the UAH Department of Biological Sciences. The UAH Distinguished Speaker Series is co-sponsored by the UAH Faculty Senate and the Office of the Provost.
Dr. Kirk O. Winemiller is Regents' Professor in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU). In addition, he directs The Winemiller Aquatic Ecology Laboratory (WAEL). The lab investigates fish ecology and evolution, community ecology, and ecosystem ecology in aquatic habitats. WAEL research is field oriented, with studies conducted at sites throughout Texas, Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Prior to joining the faculty at TAMU, Winemiller was a research associate with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, and served as Ichthyology Curator in the Texas Natural History Collection at the Texas Memorial Museum. He is frequently called to apply scientific expertise to conservation of freshwater and coastal ecosystems in the U.S. and other regions of the world.
Winemiller is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including elected as a Fellow of The American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was awarded the Ecological Society of America's Mercer Award for one of his early contributions in food web ecology. Winemiller was twice awarded U.S. Fulbright Fellowships, and has received TAMU's Regents' Professor Award, Vice Chancellor's Award for Graduate Teaching, Vice Chancellor's Award for Undergraduate Teaching, Bush Excellence Award for International Teaching, President's Award for Service to International Students, and the AgriLife Faculty Fellowship.
