On June 17th, President Biden signed a bill designating Juneteenth as a federal holiday, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. That evening Governor Ivey authorized June 18 as a holiday for Alabama state employees. Due to the late-breaking nature of the announcement, UAH was unfortunately unable to move programming and services to arrange for an institution-wide holiday on June 18th.

UAH recognizes the importance of honoring Juneteenth. Employees will receive an additional personal day to be used by September 30, 2021. We recognize the significance of this historic event and will add this holiday to our official calendar beginning next year.

We encourage each of you to use this time to reflect on the special significance of this date in our nation’s history, and to always honor Juneteenth as a time of healing, remembrance, and celebration.
