Many students want to get a jumpstart on their college education, and a great way to do this is through AP courses, Dual Enrollment, and taking the Math Placement Exam. Below are some frequently asked questions when students are deciding on how they want to approach these opportunities.

No, we see students bring in an excess of HSBS/HFA (liberal arts courses) with few or no math or science courses. This can leave a student in a challenging situation in their first two semesters at UAH, as they will have very limited course work that can be taken that applies to their degree. When students leave a few HSBS/HFA courses for future semesters, this can break up the monotony of heavy math, science, and engineering courses. General education courses may not be “easy,” but they are lower-level courses that provide great opportunities for GPA maintenance.

AP Cal AB, Physics C Mechanics, Chemistry, and Computer Science A can all provide an opportunity to better understand important components of your engineering foundation. If a student receives an adequate score on one of these exams, they are more than welcome to move on to the next course. Some students choose to retake these STEM courses at a UAH to ensure their understanding is solid before going into upper-level courses.

While the Computer Science A examination can give a student credit for EGR 101, this does not mean the course covers all the material needed for your given major. EGR 101 covers the languages Matlab and Python. Computer Science A covers Java. If you are an Aerospace or Mechanical student, a background in Matlab is critical even if you have credit for EGR 101 through your AP test. Other majors are less dependent on the languages covered in EGR 101.

Computing for Engineers (EGR 101) covers the languages Matlab and Python. If you are an Aerospace or Mechanical student a background in Matlab is important even if you have credit for a programming course. Other majors may have a greater focus on C++ or require less programming. We recommend that students take advantage of programming opportunities, but it is important to be aware that not all courses will transfer as an EGR 101 equivalent.

No, only classes taken at UAH will count toward your GPA.

Any dual enrollment class that is a prerequisite for another class MUST be passed with a C- or better grade to meet degree requirements.

No, Engineering Technology or technical degree credits do not transfer to any UAH College of Engineering degree program

The transfer articulation system allows you to look up classes that have transferred from different institutions. This database does not have everything, so always check with an Engineering academic advisor if you do not see a particular school or course listed. You can contact us at engineering@uah.edu. UAH Transfer Articulation System:

This transcript must come directly from the institution where you are taking the credit. Your high school transcript will not provide you with the appropriate credit for college-level courses. We do not recommend depending on your college level to send a dual enrollment transcript.

If your school offers dual enrollment, this is a wonderful opportunity to gain college credit that counts towards your high school and college diploma. Unlike AP credit, dual enrollment credit is given without having to stress about an exam that is based on performance on one given day. We are eager for you to participate in Dual Enrollment at UAH!
