UAH to break ground on new 80,000 sq. ft. Engineering Building
The ceremony will include dignitaries as well as The University of Alabama System Chancellor and UAH President

What: The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony to initiate plans for a new 80,000 sq. ft. Engineering Building on the UAH campus.
When: Friday, April 14, 2023 at 11:30 a.m.
Where: UAH College of Engineering Building, John Wright Dr.
Why This is Important: Huntsville and North Alabama comprise both the fastest growing region of the state and a high-tech hub with a continual need for a highly educated STEM labor force. The new Engineering Building will feature modernized, world-class research and teaching facilities that will ensure UAH continues to meet the state’s workforce needs through recruitment and retention of the most talented faculty and students, directly impacting the prosperity of the region. This is one of the newest buildings to be added during the campus transformation plan.
About: This event will initiate the first phase of construction of an 80,000-square-foot, multistory academic and research facility, which has received initial approval by The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees. The new building will accommodate the College of Engineering’s growth and greatly enhance the advanced research and development capabilities of UAH’s faculty, staff and students. Expanding the new Engineering facility will advance the university’s flagship program, promote collaborative learning, and foster innovation in fast-growing technical areas that UAH supports. The College of Engineering has 2,867 students enrolled. The new facility will be located west of the existing Engineering Building, adjacent to the campus lake along John Wright Drive.
UAH is classified as R1 – “Very high research activity” status among doctoral-granting universities by the Carnegie Classification of Institutes of Higher Education. Five of UAH’s research programs currently rank among the top 20 federally funded programs in the U.S. Fiscal Year 2021 marks the tenth year in a row UAH has had five or more research programs ranked in the top 25 nationally for federal research funding.
