Modified Landscape is an exhibition of printmaking, drawing and textiles by Katie Baldwin. In 2021, as a Fulbright Scholar, Baldwin explored the traces of human activity, transformations and reconstructions of the Taiwanese landscape. By bicycle and on foot, she visited wetlands, canals, mountains and neighborhood gardens. Over the course of the year, she created woodblock prints, made ink drawings, took photographs, and hand-pieced quilted textiles inspired by the Taiwanese landscape. Evidence of the hand in the carved block, drawn mark and stitched fabric is embraced. Working with a limited palette, pattern, shape and form, she immerses herself in the slow process of making work by hand. The work in this exhibition is an exploration of the infinite potential of limitations, questions the line between representation and abstraction, and tells a story about a specific place and time.
