He is a nationally known expert on graduate education, and has two books on the subject: The New Ph.D.: How to Build a Better Graduate Education (2021; John Hopkins University Press) and The Graduate School Mess: What Caused It and How We Can Fix It (2015; Harvard University Press). His talk will highlight the obstacles to a high-quality graduate education as well as potential solutions.
