In 1917, Leonard wanted to join the war effort, but his eyesight would prevent him from serving in the regular armed services. He joined the American Field Service, a volunteer organization that assisted the French armed forces in transporting the injured from war-torn areas to field hospitals. He captured his experiences through the lens of his 1A Kodak camera. From his 1,000 photos, letters home, and diary, Charles captured a side of the war few saw or read about.
