I. The Legislature

  1. Established in 1819.
  2. Consists of a Senate and a House of Representatives.
  3. Meets annually in Montgomery for regular sessions.

II. The Legislators

  1. Alabama has 35 Senators and 105 Representatives.
  2. Each Senate District consists of 3 Horus Districts.
  3. Qualifications for Senator:
    1. Citizen and resident of Alabama for three years.
    2. Twenty-five years of age.
    3. Resident of Senate District for one year.
  4. Qualifications for Representative:
    1. Citizen and resident of Alabama for three years.
    2. Twenty-one years of age.
    3. Resident of Legislative District for one year.

III. Term of Office

  1. Representatives and Senators are elected for four year terms.
  2. Elections are held in even numbers years.
    1. Primary Election held on first Tuesday of June to select candidates from major political parties.
    2. General Election held first Tuesday after the first Monday in November to select the Legislators.

IV. The Legislators from your district

  1. A list of members of the Legislature is available from the Secretary of State's office or at www.legislature.state.al.us.
  2. Legislators have offices in the State House and an appointment can be made to see them.

  4. It is the Legislator's duty to represent the people of their district.
    1. Let them know what you like or dislike.
    2. Your advice is instrumental in their decision making.

V. When the legislature convenes and adjourns

  1. Regular session begins on the second Tuesday in March on the first year after the election and the first Tuesday of February on the second and third year and the second Tuesday in January on the fourth year.
  2. Special sessions may be called by the Governor.
  3. Regular sessions last for 30 legislative days within 105 calendar days.
  4. Special sessions are limited to 12 legislative days within 30 calendar days.
