The Battle of the Atlantic: A U.S. Naval Perspective

Wednesday, October 2, 2024- November 6, 2024 Multiday event - 35 days

3:15 PM 4:45 PM

Wilson Hall

Offered through Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Unlike the momentous engagements characterizing the Navy’s and Marine Corp’s Pacific Campaign against Imperial Japan, most U.S. histories of the Second World War address “The Battle of the Atlantic” almost as a footnote. Yet, this marathon, three-dimensional, chess-match at sea is WWII’s longest, armed engagement. The goal for this course is to convey, from a U.S. Naval perspective, how unleashed industrial capacities, increasing lethality of naval capabilities and technologies, foreign policies steeped in the Monroe Doctrine, and Naval leadership commitment to a ‘Two-Ocean Strategy’ underpinned the Allied victory over European Fascist regimes.

Wednesday (6 SESSIONs) | COST: $40 | INSTRUCTOR: Philip graham | on campus
